Do not panic.

In this tutorial, I will show you 2 easy ways to do a WordPress theme reset to default.

Hang on.

WordPress theme reset to default

To reset a WordPress theme to its default settings, you can use a plugin or manually delete the database and folders in WordPress. However, resetting it manually will not only reset the theme but your entire WordPress site. Using a plugin like WP Reset is more straightforward and reliable.

Why do you need to reset a WordPress theme to its default settings?

The number one reason why you need to reset your WordPress theme to its default settings is that you messed it up during customization.

It may be that you do not like the current customization that you had done to it and want it to look just the way it was before.

It may also happen that, you have imported a WordPress template that you do not like anymore, but deleting the template does not restore the theme to its original settings.

How do I reset a WordPress theme without losing content?

If there are contents like posts, pages, and media, then you can take a backup of your WordPress site before resetting it.

Here are the steps:

  • Log in to WordPress.
  • Click Tools > Export.
  • On the Export page, click All content.
  • Click Download Export File.

The file will be downloaded to your computer.

Two ways to reset a WordPress theme

There are two WordPress reset theme customization options.

You can reset your WordPress theme either manually or using a plugin.

Using a plugin is more straightforward than doing it manually.

Please note that doing it manually will reset your entire WordPress site and not just the theme.

If you prefer using a plugin like WP Reset, you will have the option to reset just the theme or your entire site.

We are resetting the theme here and not our entire website.

So, let’s do it using a plugin.

Using a plugin to reset the WordPress theme

I recommend using the WP Reset plugin to do this.
